Following the Guru’s path
The city’s Sikh community awaits the celebration of 400 years of the Guru Granth Sahib with the inauguration of a new gurudwara building.
Siddharth Gaikwad

Pune, August 26: This is the 400th year of Guru Granth Sahib. To celebrate this joyous occasion, the city’s Sikh community will observe a four-day Prakash Utsav from August 29 onwards. The forthcoming event will especially be marked by the inauguration of a new building of Gurudwara Guru Nanak Darbar in Camp by Sant Baba Kahan Singhji and Gaini Hardit Singhji on August 30, at 9 am.

Made of white marble within two years, the new gurudwara building is eye-catching. The Guru ka langar hall itself measures 19000 sq.ft. The sanctum sanctorum will house a golden palkhi sahib which will have the Guru Granth Sahib in it.

Highlighting details of the palkhi, says President of 400th Prakash Utsav committee, Harminder Singh Ghai, ‘‘The palkhi has been made using a copper base coated with gold. Craftsmen from Amritsar and Rajasthan worked on it for eight months.’’

Another highlight of the gurudwara is the 70 feet tall Nishaan Sahib on which the Sikh flag will be raised on Sunday. There is a provision of a ramp for differently-abled persons to use to reach the main hall.

As a special effort, the gurudwara will be washed with milk on Saturday. Many Sikhs in the city will hoist Nishaan Sahib in their homes from Saturday to Thursday. Free sweets and fruits will be distributed in orphanages and blind schools in the city on Saturday.

A 1430-page handwritten version of Guru Granth Sahib of width 1.4 inches and length 1.4 inches will be the highlight of an exhibition of historical weapons and photographs during the four days. On Sunday, a procession of the community members will wind its way from the gurudwara in Ganesh Peth to culminate at the Camp gurudwara.
