‘Tortured’ man demands relief

SAS Nagar, August 18: ABOUT two months after a resident of Guru Nanak Colony in Phase X, Buta Singh alleged torture by the police, his family members today enacted a high drama in front of the SP office, here. Buta Singh came to the SP office and laid down on the ground demanding compensation for his alleged torture. His mother Mohinder Kaur said that they would immolate in front of the SP office if their demand was not met.

The police stated that the family had been demanding Rs 5 lakh and the job of a peon. They further said that the family had been stating that Buta had developed some problem in the spinal chord, though the medical report did not indicate anything of this kind.

Buta Singh had alleged torture after he was reportedly stopped by the policemen in Mohali for not wearing a helmet. He had allegedly picked up a fight with the policemen on duty and a case was also slapped against him for obstructing public officials from discharging their duty.

On the allegations levelled by him, three policemen were also transferred to the Police Lines while an inquiry had been initiated on the basis of Buta Singh’s complaint. Buta Singh had alleged that the police had given him electric shocks at the police station.
