JOY RIDE: PHOOLRANI AT PESHWE PARK GETTING READY FOR RELAUNCH IN MAY
Powered by solar energy, toy train chugs to life
Harish Joshi

Pune, April 14: AFTER an agonising wait for children, Phoolrani, the famous toy train at Peshwe Park is getting finishing touches for its relaunch, powered by solar energy.

The test-run using solar batteries for the train has been declared successful. One of the star attractions of the State Energy Park, a joint project of Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA) and the Pune Municipal Corporation, Phoolrani has undergone a metamorphosis with its solar-powered batteries and a colourful new look with brightly painted cartoons and renovated interiors.

With the 20 KWP solar power plant for the toy train becoming operational, the diesel engine of the toy train has been removed. Three sets of solar charged batteries are ready to power the train for its approximately 800 metre circuitous route with one tunnel. The control room for the train, being maintained by EXIDE company under a contract, too has become functional.

The hooter has become louder and clearer. Track signalling is being put in place to make the joy ride memorable for tiny tots on cushion seats that have replaced timber. The two carriages with a total capacity of 32, have been fitted with fans too. ‘‘All that is now needed for the relaunch is the completion of the surrounding landscape which the civic body may finish by this month-end,’’ says Sunil Mayabhate, General Manager of MEDA (Rural Energy).

The Central Government has sanctioned around Rs 50 lakh to run Phoolrani on solar power.

While Rs 46.58 lakh is being spent on erecting the solar power plant, Rs 3.92 lakh is being used for the necessary modifications in the toy train structure. The concept of Energy Park is being popularised to create awareness among children and the public about non-conventional and renewable energy sources sustainable in future. The May vacations this year promise to be fun with Phoolrani finding her place in the sun once again to cheer tiny passengers as she chugs along.
