Teesta Setalvad ‘threatened’
Express News Service

Ahmedabad, April 12: Father Cedric Prakash has, in a complaint registered with Ghatlodia police on Monday afternoon, alleged that two men had allegedly threatened social activist Teesta Setalvad with dire consequences during her visit to the city. The complaint identifies the two men as Dr Atul Vaidya and Bharat Taili, who allegedly threatened her for her anti-Hindu work. Teesta was provided with armed commandos on Monday morning by the city police after the state Intelligence Bureau issued directions to make arrangements for her protection. However, no arrests were made till Monday evening, police said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I) Ajaykumar Tomar said, ‘‘We have formed various teams and are searching for the accused.’’

According to the complaint lodged by Father Prakash, he was at the office of NGO Citizen for Justice and Peace, which has taken up the Best Bakery case, when two men came asking for Teesta around noon and started misbehaving. Teesta is the convenor of the NGO. She was in the city to address a women’s workshop.

Father Prakash then pacified them, offered water and asked them their names. In his complaint, he has alleged that both — Dr Atul Vaidya and Bharat Taili — were accused in the Gulbarg Society killings during the post-Godhra riots.

On realising this, Father Prakash turned to call the police. But the two went out and started raising slogans and hurled threats at Teesta. When Father Prakash got his camera to click their photographs, they covered their faces and fled on a motorcycle, alleges the complainant. Police have registered a case of criminal intimidation and issuing threats under provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the duo. However, their involvement, as alleged by Father Prakash, was yet to be confirmed by the police.
