84 riots: Cop blames Cong leaders
A police officer on Thursday told the Nanavati Commission, probing the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, that several local Congress leaders had pressurised the police to release those arrested for rioting in Central Delhi.

ACP Ranbir Singh, who was then posted as SHO Karol Bagh, said the then Congress MP Dharam Dass Shastri and others had come to the police station seeking the release of those arrested on November. JCP Amodh Kanth,the then DCP (Central District) and the then Additional CP H.C. Jatav, were present when the leaders came over, he said.

Singh, said the leaders yelled at him and Kanth for arresting 72 people.

Fake interviews: Two AIIMS staff arrested
The CBI on Thursday arrested two persons who allegedly conducted fake interviews for the post of clerk and hospital assistant with AIIMS and even made the ‘‘successful’’ candidates join service in return for illegal gratification.

Shambu and Akshay were arrested after they surendered before a designated court. The special court also remanded them to CBI custody till February, 5 to enable it to interrogate them further.

CBI had probed the case following a complaint by Chief Security Officer of AIIMS alleging that a racket was being run by some employees of the hospital. The accused had allegedly conducted fake interview for them in the OPD surgery ward on October 28.

Explain steps to clear squatters: HC to govt
Delhi High Court has directed the Centre and Delhi government to detail steps they will take to ensure removal of encroachments from the Yamuna bed.

The court had taken suo motu notice of the removal of encroachments and slums on the river bed and appointed senior advocate Amarjit Singh Chandhioke as amicus curiae.

The Court, in March last year, had directed the governments to remove all unauthorised structures, stressing that efforts were needed to ensure that rivers and their surroundings were free from pollution and environmental degradation.
