Chandigarh, September 11: After two days of police remand, during which former Punjab Director General of Police spent most of the time getting treatment at hospitals for fluctuating blood pressure, argued his case along with his counsel in the open court at Mohali today.
He has been sent to 14 days inm judicial custody.
“According to Vigilance, I own a resort at Kasauli. If it is true, I am ready to submit in writing that the government can take over the property immediately. Moreover, where are those Rs 80,000 and certain important documents, which were recovered from my briefcase? Has they been seized as the case property; or been kept in the jamatalaashi (belongings seized by the police after arresting an accused,” were the few questions Virk raised in the open court, putting the prosecution in a difficult situation.
On the other hand, raising many eyebrows, even the prosecution showed no interest in seeking police custody of SS Virk, as the Public Prosecutor LS Hundal mentioned the prosecution was not pressing for his police custody and Virk may be sent to judicial custody.
Virk was produced in the Mohali court at about 12.30 pm, when the court refused an application filed by Virk’s counsel Charanjit Bakhshi seeking exemption from appearance for Virk due to his poor health condition. SDJM Lalit Kumar Singla refused the exemption and ordered Virk to be produced in the court.
Virk’s counsel Charanjit Bakhshi pleaded that the Vigilance had two days time to question his client, but they intentionally remained at bay and did not question Virk.
Responding to Virk’s plea that he should be given account of the cash and important documents recovered from his briefcase, the court directed the Vigilance to produce related documents on September 19. While, arguing his case, Virk, too, mentioned that he was feeling perfectly alright yesterday and even requested the police officer on duty to call the officials concerned for his questioning, but nobody paid attention to his requests.
His counsel even appealed in the court that the permission may be given to the Vigilance Bureau for interrogating Virk in the court itself, but the court turned down the plea.
The court mentioned that the Patiala police would look after the former DGP and he should be immediately sent to PGI. The judge said that if the doctors would feel that the DGP is fit, he might be sent to the Central Jail, Patiala.
Highlights of high voltage drama * Senior Superintendent of Police Surinder Pal Singh Virk, who is one of the investigating officers of the case, vanished from the court when the former DGP was brought for hearing. Surinder Pal was present in the courtroom till the court ordered Vigilance to produce SS Virk. Surinder Pal even denied being an Investigating Officer of the case in front of the mediapersons.
* Vijaypal Singh Dimpy, former president of Chandigarh Congress, was also produced in the court today from where he was remanded to police custody for one day.
* After the court ordered judicial custody for SS Virk, he was taken back to PGI in an Ambassador car with a red beacon on top of the vehicle.
* According to doctors' report that was submitted to the office of Medical Superintendent, Virk's blood pressure was better although it was fluctuating at times. Meanwhile, Virk has gone back to a normal diet and is on oral medication.
* The fifth-floor private ward of PGI's Nehru hospital, where SS Virk, former Punjab Director General of Police, has been admitted, bore a deserted look today. Security was tightened and attendants of patients were not allowed to enter except during visiting hours. The benches in front of the ward in Block D, where attendants are usually found waiting or resting, were also removed. However, the posse of police personnel that swarmed the PGI campus on Monday was absent. |
