Police said two students of Amity University caught Abhitabh red-handed. He is in police custody and has confessed to the crime, police said.

The woman lives in the slums near Sector-37 and begs or scavenges the garbage for food, said sources.

At around 12 pm, Abhitabh reportedly caught hold of the woman near the Sector-37 water tank. He was raping her when the two youths—Amit and Rohit—heard her voice, said police. The accused first tried to run but when challenged, started throwing stones at the youths.

During the scuffle, Abhitabh fell in a drain and was unconscious when the police arrived at about 1 am. He was taken to the government hospital and given first-aid before being brought to the police station. He has now been sent to the prison in Dasna near Ghaziabad.

Sanjiv Verma, Station House Officer Sector-39 Police Station said, “She was moaning and could not even cry out for help. The accused was drunk when he was caught.”
