Ahmedabad, September 7: Gujarat is a state hugely affected with fluoride contamination that poses major problem for drinking water. The solution to this nagging problem lies in changing dietary habits, rainwater harvesting and promotion of de-fluoridation of potable water. This was discussed at length on the first day of the three-day meet of water experts at a seminar `Everything About Water’ that began in the city on Friday.
With the water intensive industries — like chemicals, dye, pharmaceutical and textile—- concentration in the State, an irreparable damage to the environment has been caused by disposing toxic waste, accepted experts who met under one roof to discuss various problems confronting water and their possible solution.
“With the discharge standards permitting a disposal of the treated wastewaters at a Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) not exceeding 2,100 mg/l, the solution lies in either blending the treated textile effluents with the treated city sewage to hold the TDS to less than 2100 mg/l or to opt for technology to recover useable water from textile effluents,” said H. Subramaniam, Vice President, EA Water Pvt Ltd, the organising member of the event. Provision of safe drinking water is not only a public issue but also an infrastructural concern, he further observed.
The degrading quality of ground water with high levels of dissolved salts has left users with limited options. With the lower reliability of municipal ground water supply, most industries depend on bore well water. Subramaniam observed water conservation demanded that concentrate water was not wasted.
The water show will also host a conference on ‘Clear Solutions for Clean Water’ and will have experts and speakers on water and wastewater management who will discuss on the latest technological breakthroughs. |
