Saving life, pronto Neeraj Rawal can thank the 1066 team for being alive, after a serious fall in the home stretch, during the fifth race on August 4. “In anticipation of such serious accidents the RWITC has contracted the 1066 EMS from Jehangir Hospital to provide emergency medical coverage during the race season,” says Sr Stipendiary Steward, Shujjat Hussain. According to Dr Manisha Bobde, in-charge of the 1066 team, they reached him within one minute of his having fallen off the horse. This was possible because the 1066 ambulance keeps pace with the horses as they race around the outer track. She and her colleagues Dr Krishna and Dr Kunal, assisted by the brother nurse, had to clamber over two sets of railings to get to the unconscious jockey. He was already gasping for breath and the team realized that he probably had sustained serious head injury along with some cervical cord edema. “It was imperative to stabilize him immediately on the spot itself, which we did by applying a cervical collar and then shifted him to the 1066 ambulance with the help of a ‘Scoop’ stretcher, using a specialized technique to protect his entire spine and avoid further damage. At this juncture, the jockey stopped breathing and the medical team quickly put him on a ventilator with 100 per cent oxygen. Medication was given for suspected brain and cervical cord edema and the patient was quickly shifted to Jehangir Hospital. The immediate treatment and artificial breathing support ensured that he started regaining consciousness and breathing on his own by the time the ambulance reached the hospital. After performing a CT scan and MRI, he was shifted to the ICU where he regained full consciousness and control over his breathing.
