NGO files RTI application
City-based Paryavaran Suraksha Samiti demanded info to gauge efficiency of chemical emergency plan in State

Vadodara, July 01: With a view that the State could face chemical emergency, a city-based environment NGO Paryavaran Suraksha Samiti (PSS) on Saturday filed an RTI application demanding comprehensive information about the State Government's level of preparation for such an event.

According to the PSS, the information was important because of the higher risk these industries face during the monsoons and added that they wanted to know the if the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) was well equipped to prevent a disaster, rather than only relief activity.

Paryavaran Suraksha Samiti front man Rohit Prajapati said, "Chemical plants in the state have become very complex of late, which makes them less predictable. Also many chemical industries use extremely hazardous processes and materials."

He added that the aim of the RTI application was to gauge the efficiency of a chemical emergency plan, "has the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority devised one?"

The information requested in the application include, qualification and expertise of the members of the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority , details about the chemical emergency plan, disaster assessment reports, Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority’s plan to involve citizens in an emergency, list of specialists employed for such an exercise and lesson the have learnt from past experiences.
