CYBER CAFé OWNERS SAY POLICEMEN ASKED THEM TO DENY ACCESS TO SITE; SENIOR OFFICERS DENY CLAIMS
‘Police have asked us to block Orkut’
Sachin Dave

Mumbai, June 18: Cyber cafes across Mumbai and Thane have blocked Orkut and their owners blame policemen for it rather than the Shiv Sena. The party alleges that the site has unacceptable content about Chhatrapati Shivaji and Bal Thackeray. Yet, when asked, cyber café owners claim that it is the police that have asked them to block Orkut.

“The cops came here and asked us to block Orkut,” is the standard reply cyber cafe owners give whenever a customer complains that the website is inaccessible.

While top police officials are quick to say that they have not received any orders to block the site, local policemen are visiting cyber cafes in the city, asking the owners to deny access to Orkut.

“We have not received any instruction about banning Orkut so we can’t ask anyone to do so,” says Sanjay Mohite, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Enforcement).

But, according to Kalpesh Shah, who owns a cyber cafe in Thakur Complex in Borivali (West), the police keep coming to his cyber cafe every week. “To avoid problems, I have put up a notice saying that Orkut has been blocked. But it's ridiculous as customers argue with us seeking to know the rationale behind the decision,” says Shah.

Earlier, Shiv Sainiks had gone on rampage after alleged disparaging remarks against party chief Bal Thackeray and Shivaji were posted on Orkut. Party activists attacked cyber cafes in Thane and Mumbai, demanding a ban on Orkut.

However, Archana Tyagi, Thane superintendent of police, said, “No site, Orkut or any other, can be banned unless we receive orders, which we have not till now. No one can force anyone from accessing the site.”

But almost every cyber cafe owner in Thane has been told to block Orkut by policemen. “We want to avoid law and order problems so we are asking cyber cafe owners to block Orkut. I don’t think that’s wrong,” said a senior police inspector attached to a Central Mumbai police station.

An employee at a cyber cafe in Evershine Nagar in Malad (West), asks, “Can’t the police handle law-breakers who vandalise cyber cafes rather than asking us to block the site? We would gladly not allow anyone to access a particular site if it were officially banned. But Shiv Sainiks and police are using arm-twisting methods to get Orkut blocked.” The Mumbai Police had earlier decided to write to the Home Ministry to block objectionable remarks on Orkut claiming that they were inflammatory.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Thane) Anup Kumar Singh had earlier told mediapersons, “The police will certainly act since there is objectionable matter and an organisation has objected to it. We have verified that their objections are correct. Naturally, the police also feel that there should be no law and order problem.”
