Khaki Dhoom: City police to vroom in on new bikes soon
Rajat Rai

Lucknow, January 8: Enfields and Bullets are passe, soon city cops will be vrooming in on new, jazzy bikes. Lucknow policemen will soon get 25 Bajaj Pulsar, 34 TVS Apache and 23 Hero Honda Achiever motorcycles.

The high speed, 150cc four-stroke mobikes, may not be very fuel efficient, but according to senior police officials, they will help in checking crime rate in the city. There will definitely be a decline in crimes like chain snatchings, loot, etc., as the criminals will know that the cops also have a similar capacity mtorcycle and will be able to catch them,’’ said RN Singh, Circle Officer (Chowk).

According to Rajiv Krishna, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Lucknow, this is an effective way to increase the visibility of the police. ‘’The policemen will patrol on these motorcycles and will be able to react fast in case of a crime,’’ said Krishna. He also added that the police stations of the city will be given these motorcycles depending upon the requirement in their policing area.

Some vital accessories are also beibg fitted in the motorcycles to help the cops in effective patrolling and policing. Greyish gold in color, the motorcycles have the logo of the Uttar Pradesh Police along with ‘POLICE’ pasted on the front wiser. Two matching color helmets are also being provided along with a side bag.

‘’Apart from a police siren, a mobile phone charging point is also provided to enable the cops to charge their mobile phones in case they are moving in remote places,’’ said RK Singh, reserve inspector, police lines, Lucknow.

At present the motorcycles are lodged in the garage of the police lines, waiting to be flagged off. ‘’We will very soon be handing over these motorcycles to policemen and they will be flagged off probably by the Director General of Police, UP,’’ informed Krishna. However, he did not gave the exact date. Meanwhile, the cops also seemed happy with the idea of new motorcycles.

‘’It is a tough task to chase the criminals on our present motorcycles, as they are not able to match high speeds and do not have good pickup. We will now be able to vroom at the same speed as the criminals do and they will definitely have problems now,’’ said a constable, prefering anonymity.
