Mumbai, November 11: A two-day international convention on worldwide advances in comprehensive management of HIV/AIDS started on Saturday at Taj Mahal Hotel and Palace and Tower, Colaba. The conference, organised by Wockhardt Harvard Aids Research Foundation (WHARF), was inaugurated by the Governor SM Krishna.
The event is largely being seen as a platform for discussions on the issues related to the diseases like counselling, social stigma and quality treatment.
Commenting on the fact that Maharashtra stands sixth in India in the prevalence of HIV, the governor said, “The need of the hour is to bridge the gap between scientific research and training consultants.”
In its effort to spread awareness, WHARF has also tied up with Mumbai Police. “We want them to help us spread awareness, while we, in turn, will provide them free counselling,” said Nafisa Khorakiwala, president and managing trustee, WHARF. In response, Inspector General of Police, Javed Ahmed added, “We have pledged support in order to gain awareness.”
The first day of the conference dealt with issues like counselling, change in attitude towards HIV patients, quality treatment and the involvement of the police and media. |
