Fourteen rounds of .32 calibre were found in her bag at Sahar airport, she says they belong to her brother
Express News Service

Mumbai, September 21: An Israeli woman was booked for carrying cartridges in her baggage at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport by the Sahar police on Thursday.

According to Senior Inspector C K Chavan, 24-year-old student Noah Haviv had flown in from Tel Aviv on Israel Airlines Flight LY 0071 at the Sahar airport enroute Delhi at 8 am.

The Jet Airways security staff, who checked her bag while she was on her way to board the flight to Delhi, found 14 rounds of bullets of .32 caliber in the flap of her bag. The staff alerted the Sahar police, who arrested her under the Arms Act and Aircraft Act for illegal possession of ammunition.

Chavan said Noah, on questioning, revealed that the bullets belonged to her brother Itzak Haviv, who is an accountant by profession. She told the police that she had borrowed her brother’s bag and did not bother to check it.

The police, on contacting Itzak, were assured that the ammunition belonged to him and he had the licence for possessing them. Itzak also assured the police that he would send them the fascimile copies of the ammunition licence. Noah will be produced before the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

A Senior Customs Officer said Noah would also be booked under the Customs Act (read with Arms Act) as carrying of undeclared ammunition is also a violation of the Customs laws.

To import licenced arms and ammunition in to the country, prior approval has to be obtained from the Home Ministry and should be declared to the Customs while landing in the country.

In this case, though the ammunition have been said to be licenced, no prior permission was obtained from the Home Ministry and nor were they declared.
