Amritsar, July 4: THE Dhariwal police has arrested Sukhpal Singh, a Punjab Police constable and suspended three others, identified as head constable Chanchal Singh, constable Gurdev Singh and driver Raghubir Singh on charges of beating up a pregnant woman of Dullowana village, resulting in her delivering a dead baby.
While Simranjit Kaur, the 21-year-old victim of the brutality is convalescing at the Gurdaspur Civil Hospital after the incident, DGP S S Virk is reported to have taken a strong notice of the rising police atrocities in the state.
Sources stated that the accused had a score to settle with Kamaljit Singh Ladda, husband of Simranjit Kaur, who was seven months pregnant. They allegedly barged into his house and beat up his father Tarsem Singh. Simranjit too was beaten up when she intervened to save her father-in-law. Soon afterwards, she went into labour and delivered a dead child. SSP Paramraj Singh Umranangal said an inquiry had been marked into the matter and the case would be duly probed.
