Tee in a hole: CGA club fights youths, armed escorts over unpaid bill
Backed by gunmen with AK-47s, five men hurl stones at hotel staff, smash club windows, walk away without paying dues: Rs 5,790
Express News Service

Chandigarh, April 10: The staff of the Hot Millions outlet at Chandigarh Golf Association (CGA) club last night faced the fury of five unidentified youths and their three escorts armed with AK-47 rifles. They assaulted the hotel staff, smashed the windows of the club’s reception and then sped away in four vehicles without paying the bill.

Though the police have the registration numbers of the four vehicles, they have not been able to trace the persons in whose names the vehicles are registered.

A hotel employee narrated the incident. ‘‘A group of eight persons — three of them armed — came to our restaurant around 8.15 pm. They were probably VIPs with their gunmen,’’ he said. The group settled down to have snacks and alcohol. By the time they finished, the bill had touched Rs 5,790, the employee said.

‘‘By 11.30 am, when the restaurant closes for the day, they were all drunk and started abusing one another. One after the other, they started leaving the bar. We tried to stop them and asked them to pay the bill, but they kept moving,’’ he said.

When the hotel staff and the club’s sentry tried to stop the inebriated youths and their gunmen, they started pelting them with stones and bricks. The police were promptly called, the staff said. ‘‘But the men kept hurling stones at us and abusing us in front of the policemen, who just stood there and watched while the eight men went off in their cars,’’ a hotel employee alleged.

Around six hotel employees and the club’s guard sustained minor injuries. They were taken for medical examination and later discharged. The UT Police allegedly lodged a case only after senior police officials intervened.

‘‘We received the written complaint only this morning,’’ said Station House Officer, Sector 26 police station, Inspector P L Chauhan. ‘‘We have registered a case against the occupants of the four cars, the numbers of which were provided to us by the hotel staff. We are investigating the case, but no arrests have been made so far,’’ he said.
