Sterilisation case: Father does not want a complaint
Express News Service

Ludhiana, December 27: THE case of 20-year-old unmarried youth who underwent vasectomy for money has finally been closed following youth’s father Surindepal Singh’s refusal to lodge a complaint with police.

Surinderpal today told Division No. 2 SHO Gurpreet SIngh that he did not want to lodge a complaint with police. He said the family knew their son is a drug addict. Gurpreet Singh said, ‘‘Surinderpal has given in written that neither he nor his family wanted to lodge a complaint against anyone. Since we have no complaint, the case is closed.’’

It may be mentioned here that Surinderpal had told Haibowal police that his mentally-retarded son was operated upon under the family planning programme. He had held the health authorities responsible for this alleging that the latter conducted vasectomy without checking the marital status of his son. The youth was operated upon for vasectomy on October 18 at Civil Hospital. He had shown himself to be married with two kids. He had told hospital authorities that his wife agreed to his decision to udnergo vasectomy.

Civil Surgeon Dr Rajinder Kaur ordered a probe, appointing District Family Welfare Officer Dr Manorama Awasthy as the investigation officer. The Haibowal police handed over the case to Division No. 2 police, under whose jursidiction the Civil Hospital lies. SHO Gurpreet Singh repeatedly kept on calling both parties but Surindepal and his son did not turn up. ‘‘Today, Surinderpal gave us in written that he did not want to make a complaint against anyone,’’ said Gurpreet.
