Youth undergoes vasectomy for money
He is a drug addict, claimed that his age was 33
Express News Service

Ludhiana, December 24: A 20-year-old unmarried youth underwent vasectomy operation at Civil Hospital, all for some money. The incident came to light when the youth’s father Surinderpal Singh approached Haibowal police station with the complaint that his son’s friend had cheated him by making him undergo vasectomy.

The youth underwent vasectomy in October, during the campaign launched by the Health Department to make this family planning method popular among men. The department had given an incentive of Rs 1,000 each to men who underwent vasectomy at the camp held on October 18 at the Civil Hospital.

The authorities at Haibowal police station said that the youth is a drug addict and underwent vasectomy to earn few bucks to get drugs. At the hospital, he got himself registered as a 33-year-old married man with two children. He also stated that he was undergoing this operation with his wife’s consent.

Haibowal police have forwarded the case to Division 2 police station. ‘‘We received the case papers today itself. We have called both the parties tomorrow and will seek medical opinion in this regard,’’ said Station House Officer of Division 2, Gurpreet Singh.

Civil Surgeon Dr Rajinder Kaur has handed the inquiry of this case to District Family Planning Officer Dr Manorama Awasthy. Health authorities assert that their department is not at fault. The department seeks no documents such as marriage certificate and only the wife’s consent is needed, said an official.

The role of the medical health worker who acted as a motivator in bringing the man to the camp is also under cloud. Sources say Dr Manorama will look into this aspect too.

The father of this youth had approached the police, claiming that his son had been ‘forced into vasectomy’ by his friends. The father had claimed that the youth is mentally ill, but preliminary investigation revealed that he is a drug addict.
