Daniel Chopra tees off for quake victims
Express News Service

New Delhi, November 10: He isn’t as well known as the Arjun Atwals or the Jyoti Randhawas or the Jeev Milkha Singhs. But he has his heart in the right place. The Kashmir (both sides of the border, and especially in Pakistan) earthquake may not have stirred too many golfers, but with the Indo-Pak golf Dil Se initiative (between well-known golf playing corporates and businessmen from either side) in progress, it was a good forum to place this idea.

Chopra started it immediately, with a donation of $ 10,000 and then a sports management company went about e-mailing top golfers from around the world for signed memorabilia. Golfing legends like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Gary Player, Nick Faldo and Bernard Langer sent in caps, gloves and other such that will be put under the hammer in Lahore this month when the meet is held.

‘‘I read of the initiative in the media and decided that I must do something,’’ said Chopra, here to promote his stance. ‘‘I thought of sending stuff directly to the affected place and people. Maybe medical supplies or whatever ..’’

The target initially is Rs 15 lakh, but the corporates on either side could push it to double that amount.‘‘I am an Indian, and having spent much of my playing days in Kashmir and Gulmarg, I could not stay away,’’ was his signoff.
