AIIMS-Naraina stretch to become signal-free
PWD has earmarked Rs 50-60 lakh for the construction of split rotaries
Express News Service

New Delhi, October 16: The ride from AIIMS to Naraina may soon be an uninterrupted one. PWD is all set to make the stretch signal-free with its plans to construct a pair of split rotaries at Brar Square between Dhaula Kuan and Naraina.

Once in place, the split rotaries will convert the 1.5 km stretch between Dhaula Kuan and Naraina into a signal-free stretch. At present there is a traffic signal at Brar Square intersection which also serves as a route into Delhi Cantt. and the domestic airport. Waiting time at the intersection varies from 3-5 minutes.

“Construction of split rotaries at Brar Square has been on the cards for some time now. This is part of our composite plan to widen the Ring Road between Dhaula Kuan and Rajouri Garden. While Rs 23 crore has been earmarked for the entire project, Rs 50-60 lakh has been allocated for construction of the split rotaries”, said a senior PWD official.

“The split rotaries will be located at a distance of 600 meters from the intersection. Those coming from Naraina and wanting to go to the airport will have to take a right at the split rotary to get on the other carriageway and then take the free left turn to the Delhi Cantt area. This will ease traffic flow considerably. We have already done preliminary work on the project and will start construction of the split rotaries as soon as the forest department permits us to cut trees falling in the way”, added the official.

This is in keeping with the Delhi government’s plan to convert the entire Ring Road into a widened signal-free zone. The stretch between Dhaula Kuan and Rajouri Garden is already in the process of being converted from a six lane to eight lane carriageway. Work on eight-laning has also started near Rajghat on the Ring Road.
