TALKING POINT with Sudha Chandran
Chandran tells us what it feels like to be stuck on a wall in her latest serial
Swati Anand

Mumbai, July 10: How does it feel stepping into Priya Tendulkar’s shoes in Hum Paanch?
It’s an honour to replace Priyaji. She was a fine actor and it’s going to be a huge challenge to get people to accept me. It’s always easier to create an image than fill in for someone else.

You’ve made style statements in various serials.
But in Hum Paanch, as a picture on the wall, you’ll always be in one outfit. Disappointed?
On the contrary, I’m so relieved. My costume is not going to be a headache. I’m just going to concentrate on my performance.

Have you worked with anyone from the Hum Paanch cast before?
Although I know most of them, I’ve only worked with Rakhi Tandon (Sweety) before. I don’t know if the same actors will be retained in the new season though. Did you know that Vidya Balan was a part of the cast for a brief period? I think she played the role which later went to Amita Nangia.

Gayatri Kaul hasn’t quite lived up to Ramola Sikand, has she?
It took more than a year for Ramola Sikand in Kahin Kisi Roz to be accepted. K Street Pali Hill has been on air since January. Give it some time and I’m sure Gayatri Kaul will catch up.

What do you watch on telly?
This might sound funny, but I reach home in time to catch K Street Pali Hill. I just can’t bring myself to watch English serials, I guess I’m too desi for them.

And on the big screen?
Shah Rukh Khan. I watched Devdas six times because the first four times I only noticed him and ignored the rest. I didn’t know he was in Silsiilay and by the time I knew, the film was out of the theatres. I’ll have to catch it on DVD now.

We heard you’re in a Priyadarshan flick.
When I first got the call from Priyadarshan a few weeks ago, I thought it was a prank. The movie’s called Malamal Weekly and the cast includes Om Puri, Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav. I play a rich zamindar and Yadav is my brother. It must be obvious from the casting that this one’s a comedy. The film will definitely preare me for Hum Paanch.
