Aptitude testing has become quite a norm today. With results fogging the air with tension and anxiety, resorting to test your aptitude is a good way to clear the air of confusion.
Students from the city are quite in sync with the deal it seems. Arman Mann from Sector 6, Panchkula, who has just passed her class X boards from Sacred Heart, feels relieved after having taken the test at the SI Centre in Sector 32.
‘‘I was confused because I wanted to take up non-medical but was not sure of Chemistry.’’ After taking the test she found out that her mind was scientific but her attitude was inclined towards management. She has now joined the non-medical stream and plans to pursue an MBA after that.
A number of students who took this test in the past are now quite happy with the results.
Nazuk from Sector 36 had taken up a test like this three years back and is successfully pursuing an engineering degree in Canada.
‘‘I was interested in commerce and after I took the test, Krishan Kumar asked me to come again the following day.’’
‘’He sent my aptitude report to the Canadian University and I was selected for my current course,’’ she added.
She is amongst the toppers in the Computer Engineering stream. According to Krishan Kumar who has retired from the
Institute of Education, Sector 32, who has been conducting these tests for the past two years, says ‘‘Children from the same family can have different aptitudes.’’ Rohin, Rajjat and Divya are siblings from Sector 45.
Rajjat’s tests proved his aptitude in Medical science and he got through the MBBS tests in the USA, while Rohin who has just cleared his class XII was asked to take up non-medical. He has already cleared the entrance for product designing in Symbiosis college in Pune.
Rajjat and Rohin’s sister, Divya was found to have a flair for Humanities and is pursuing textile designing from National Institute of Designing, Ahmedabad.
Bhuvneshwar, another student, switched from medical science to fine arts, following the test.
‘‘I did very well in class twelfth after changing my subjects,’’ he says.
Indian women more able than their US counterparts: Counsellor
ONE place where students can seek aptitude analysis is the State Institute of Education, where Surinder Kaur is Counsellor and the other is a private institute run by Krishan Kumar and Surinder Singh in Mohali. Newsline spoke to Krishan Kumar and found out the theory behind these tests.
‘‘There are 150 types of abilities,’’ he says. According to him there are no differences between male and female abilities though research proves that ‘‘the abilities of Indian women are higher as compared to women from USA, Canada, U.K and Germany.’’
There are two kinds of abilities, Convergent, dealing with Intelligence, maths, commerce etc, and Divergent that deals with Creativity and Humanities. These abilities, according to Kumar, are inherited through six generations.
The second phase of this process is counselling which is ‘‘assistance on the part of the counsellor in solving the clients’ problems,’’ says Kumar. The two components that are involved in deciphering the aptitude are characteristics of a person and characteristics of the job.
‘‘Some people have the calibre to do the job but they cannot take the pressure,’’ says Kumar.
