Chandigarh, April 29: Narain Singh Chaura, one of the accused in the Burail jailbreak case, has alleged that he was given electric shocks around 200 times during his police custody. ‘‘I was also left hanging upside down and beaten up mercilessly. If this remains the way the police treat undertrials, I am afraid there will be more rebels against the system,’’ he alleged.
Chaura secured bail and was released on Friday afternoon. His sureties and bail bonds for both the jailbreak conspiracy case and the case under the Arms Act were accepted by the court.
Surrounded by his ageing father and son, Chaura met people at his lawyer’s house. ‘‘Honestly speaking, the government just wanted to harass me for no fault of mine. First, the police tortured me brutally after my arrest, and then I was lodged in the jail for about 15 months,’’ said Chaura.
Chaura was granted bail alongwith other accused by Chief Judicial Magistrate Neerja Kalson on April 16. On Friday, the court of Judicial Magistrate (First Class) R.K. Mehta accepted Chaura’s sureties of Rs 50,000 each and bail bonds and granted him bail.
A post-graduate in political science and Punjabi literature and a diploma-holder in Sikh mission. Chaura used to teach at SGPC institutions.
His lawyer said, ‘‘The administration’s role in the investigations in the case has been questionable from the beginning, starting from their 10,000-page challan and then the denial of bail till the last moment. My client would seek compensation.’’ |
