Custodial death: Prisoner cremated

Chandigarh, February 13: The dead body of Rajinderjit Singh, who died at PGI on Thursday, allegedly due to torture by Ludhiana police was cremated today. In the meanwhile, report of the post mortem conducted on Saturday is expected to be available on Monday evening. On Saturday eight doctors of PGI had conducted post mortem on the dead body.

Nirmal Singh, brother-in-law of the deceased, told Newsline that Sanjeev Sharma Duty Magistrate Patiala, who was present at PGI during the post mortem, has issued summon orders to SP (Jail) Ludhiana and SP (Jail), Patiala. Sharma had also issued summon orders to the constable who was in charge of the deceased for taking the latter to the hospital and the jail. Nirmal Singh also said he and the younger brother of the deceased, Randeep Singh, have received summon orders.

Nirmal Singh also said that the family would file a case at the Punjab and Haryana High Court to seek justice and to punish the police officials who were involved in the brutal torture of Raninderjit.

Meanwhile, lawyers for Human Rights International, the Human Rights body that conducted investigation into the alleged torture of Raninderjit Singh, has decided to meet Director Vigilance Punjab on Monday to initiate action against the police personnel involved in the torture.

President of the human rights body A.S. Chahal said its members will ask the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana high Court on Monday to look into this matter.
