THE traffic on Chandigarh-Ambala highway remained disrupted today due to the last night damage to Ghaggar bridge near Bhankarpur villand reasons for the damage. He said they had found the bridge intact during a pre-monsoon inspection. ‘‘The bridge waas repaired about three years ago when a similar problem had occurred,’’ he said.
Does that mean tha wooden log. Does that mean thrdan went missing, and led the bridge to sink in by a few inches.
According to him, the engineers who visited the site, today found the bearings missing. He added the bridge was around 50 years old and might have been damaged in the recent earthquake which had its epicentre near Ambala.
‘‘Ideally, the bearings should have stayed in their place, due to the heavy load on them,’’ he said, adding an expert from Delhi would visit the spot tomorrow to find reasons for the damage. He said they had found the bridge intact during a pre-monsoon inspection. ‘‘The bridge was repaired about three years ago when a similar problem had occurred,’’ he said.

| Repairing the bridge would take another two days. ‘‘We have placed the order for the bearings which would reach us tonight. Tomorrow, we will repair the bridge, using hydraulic lifts,’’ the superintending engineer, PWD (Central circle) said. ‘‘Traffic from Ambala to Chandigarh or Kalka would be diverted through Barwala while those going towards New Delhi would have to take the road towards Rajpura and then turn towards Ambala on the National Highway,’’ he added. |
Also, a political logjam on city roads
Chandigarh : THE traffic on Madhya Marg too was disrupted due to the movement of vehicles carrying supporters of the Haryana Congress for the Matka Chowk rally. The 1,000-odd policemen of Chandigarh, Haryana and Punjab had a tough time managing the traffic.
The worst-affected were Madhya Marg, roads dividing Sector 18-17, Sectors 21-22. 22-23, 22-35, 21-34, and Dakshin Marg up to the poultry farm roundabout on the Chandigarh-Zirakpur highway. The queue of vehicles extended from Press chowk light point to Matka chowk. It took the vehicles more than 15 minutes to cross the press light point.
There were jams on the Sector 29-30 dividing road too. The road was made two-way for the recarpeting work due to which road from Chandigarh to Zirakpur was also blocked. The Jan Marg was opened after 6 pm.
Shots fired
A commuter reportedly fired in the air at Zirakpur. He was angry at being stopped and insisted on going via the road that was closed to traffic. He has been arrested.
