FROM SPITTING ON STREETS TO HAWKER MENACE TO FELLING TREES...
Rohini meets RTI, seeks accountability
Express News Service

New Delhi, October 23: FROM Vasant Kunj in South Delhi last month to Rohini in North-West, The Indian Express-Parivartan RTI camp today travelled across the city. And though the venue was the community hall at Delhi Citizen’s Apartment in Sector 13, Rohini, people came from nearby areas like Mayapuri and Shalimar Bagh too. Helped by a team of volunteers — after being informed about the Right to Information Act and how it can be used through an audio-visual show — people filled RTI applications with their queries.

In Rohini, of course, a large number of residents seemed dissatisfied with the way the group housing societies were functioning and wanted the government to make them accountable. However, other questions encompassed a wide range: spitting on the streets, the hawker menace, encroachments, ill-maintained parks and even felling of trees.

Retired engineer, Sector 11

‘‘There are large-scale financial irregularities in the records maintained by almost all managing committees of co-operative housing societies in Rohini...Entry fees as high as Rs 1 lakh are charged by these committees before people can take possession of their flats. We still have to rely on temporary electricity connections for our flats. All this despite numerous complaints to the Registrar of Co-operative Group Housing Societies. I want to file an application to get complete financial records of the managing committee of our society and also want to know why the Registrar has taken no action.’’

Sector 13

‘‘People spit and litter all around and no one seems bothered. I am filing an RTI application with MCD, asking them how many people have been fined for spitting and littering in public places this year. Since the authorities are sleeping, it is time we ensure the city becomes clean,’’ she said.

Subodh Gupta
Student, Shalimar Bagh

‘‘I want to know how our MLA utilized the funds given for developmental work. Once I get the information, I will verify it to confirm the status of these works,’’ he said.

O.P. Kapoor
RWA member, Mayapuri

‘‘I am filing an RTI application with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to find out how and why encroachments are being allowed in parks. I also want to know the strength of the staff employed for the upkeep of these parks, the number of saplings planted here in the past two years and why water is allowed to stagnate here,’’ he said.
